Local League Program for 2008

Review of 2007 Program Priorities and Progress2008 PrioritiesLocal Consensus.

2008 Planning Meeting

Each year, the Local League holds a planning meeting to discuss and revise program priorities for the coming year. At the state level, program proposals are voted upon at the statewide convention, held every two years. At the national level, program proposals are voted upon at the national convention, held every two years. The goals of the yearly program at the local level are voted upon at the Annual Meeting. The program is not all-inclusive. The League may choose to work on other projects deemed important for local effort. League activities may not be in conflict with the state and national programs.

2008 Program

The following priorities were approved by the membership at the annual meeting held May 24, 2008, at Madeline Suite, UNCW. 1) Organize and implement programs to foster civic awareness of state and local government issues including a forum where local citizens are able to speak directly to their legislators. 2) Open Government: Continue to study the level of openness of local governments and develop recommendations. 3) Sewer Systems: Continue to monitor progress and take action as appropriate for improvements to the city and/or county sewer systems serving the Lower Cape Fear area. 4) Conduct inquiry into treatment of immigrants by local government.

Immigration: A NATIONAL STUDY

In 2005, LWVUS voted at the Minneapolis national convention to begin a two year study on Immigration preparatory to adopting positions relating to the subject. The next year was devoted to gathering the research from a variety of sources and summarizing it for members to study themselves. The summaries are available at the LWVUS website: Federal Immigration Policy: Enforcement Issues; Immigration: Diversity and Inclusion; Effects of Global Interdependence on Migration.
In 2007, local leagues throughout the country were asked to study the materials and to reach consensus on key questions related to the summaries. Our League scheduled seven seminars for discussion and sent our reactions to the LWV-US.
When completed, the two-year Immigration Study, aimed at helping communities understand the implications of immigration at the local, state, and federal level, allowed League members and leaders to explore the underlying values and principles regarding immigration, reasons for immigration, current federal immigration policy, and the impact of immigration in American society. Our members were sensitized by the process and have since begun a local study of local government policy toward immigrants.

LWVUS POSITION ON IMMIGRATION - Apr 01, 2008 The League of Women Voters believes that immigration policies should promote reunification of immediate families; meet the economic, business and employment needs of the United States; and be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises. Provision should also be made for qualified persons to enter the U.S. on student visas. All persons should receive fair treatment under the law. (See LWV.org for more details.)

In 2008, we will begin a study of National Health Care.
